What are good catch phrases when networking?

“Do you come here often?” works for me. Sure it’s a sleazy pick-up line but when I deliver it there is no mistake thinking that I’m on the move.

I’m not a believer in using catch phrases. I believe that it is more important to have a short elevator pitch that piques the other person’s interest so they want to learn more about you. I also think it is important to be a good listener and an interviewer.

If you ask questions about the other person, in most cases they will believe you are genuinely interested in them and will respond in kind. There will always be paranoid people out there who will be suspicious of any question you ask them.

A catch phrase I hear often is ‘so what’s new?’

This isn’t an opportunity to share all the awful things happening right now in your life. It is an open door to share what projects you are working on and success stories worth sharing. Sharing… not bragging about.
